DISTRONIC PLUS: Warns and Assists The Driver

Inadequate following distances, inattentiveness on the part of the driver and unexpected, abrupt traffic standstills are the most common causes of rear-end collisions. Radar-based DISTRONIC PLUS adaptive cruise control provides a remedy here.

The system keeps you automatically at a distance from the vehicle in front and makes a major contribution towards minimising the risk of rear-end collisions by identifying potentially dangerous situations and responding accordingly.

The cutting-edge radar technology employed by DISTRONIC PLUS monitors the situation ahead of the car and is able to recognise an impending accident. Behind the front bumper panels there are two short-range radar sensors covering a range from 20 cm to 30 metres and a scanning angle of 80 degrees. The long-range radar is concealed behind the radiator grille. A special drum technology enables both long- and mid-range coverage. The system has a long-distance range of 200 m at a scanning angle of 18° and a mid-distance range of 60 m at a scanning angle of 60°.

The DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control has an operating range of 0.2 to 150 metres and is capable of braking the car all the way to a standstill and accelerating it back up to the pre-set desired speed, if the traffic situation permits.
DISTRONIC PLUS brakes the vehicle automatically in stop-and-go traffic, bringing it to a standstill if necessary. Automatic braking is carried out at a deceleration rate of up to 4 m/sec2. As soon as the traffic situation allows, DISTRONIC PLUS accelerates up to the set speed again, relieving the driver of tiring routine activities involving repeated moving off and subsequent braking in stop-and-go or bumper-to-bumper traffic.
If DISTRONIC PLUS detects that heavier braking is necessary, an intermittent warning tone will sound and a warning symbol will light up in the instrument cluster. These two warnings prompt the driver to exercise special caution and to apply the brakes himself, if necessary. To move off again after coming to a complete standstill, the cruise control lever must be lifted or the accelerator pedal tapped.
The speed set by the driver is shown on the display when DISTRONIC PLUS is active. When a relevant vehicle is recognised in the radar detection range, its speed is also shown on the display. A distance display can also be called up.
