The Wankel engine (/ [vɑkɛl] /) is a rotary piston engine operating on the Beau de Rochas cycle, in which a "triangular" piston converts energy from the combustion of fuel into mechanical rotational energy transmitted to crankshaft. The Wankel engine is wrongly commonly referred to as "rotary engine", although the functions of the two types of engines are radically different.

The principle of the Wankel engine is based on that of the vane pump, which dates back to the second half of the sixteenth century. But it was only in the 1950s that the engine is developed in its present form, the one who left his name, the German engineer Felix Wankel. NSU is the first manufacturer to obtain the license, equipping its motorcycles engine before selling it to other manufacturers.

Unlike the piston engine to a linear movement in the cylinder, the Wankel engine does not use the principle of connecting rod-crank system. It does not perform reciprocating motion, which reduces the movement transformations, friction, vibration and noise. The set also includes a small number of parts. These advantages make it an attractive technical solution there is a wide range of applications in all fields of transport (cars, motorcycles, aircraft). Its use in production vehicles still remains a minority, mainly due to its high consumption and sealing problems inherent in the principle itself. In 2010, the automotive sector, the manufacturer Mazda still integrates the motor vehicles.
